Feeling bold and empowered can sometimes be difficult to achieve. While some may subscribe to the “fake it ‘til you make it” strategy, it’s often short-lived as self-doubt and insecurities creep in. Since we all wear a variety of hats—friend, parent, colleague, boss—dedicating time to work on ourselves can get lost in the midst of busy schedules and managing a family.

You probably know someone who seems to show consistent strength, energy and enthusiasm at work or in raising their family. Do you ever wonder what their secret is? How does he or she always seem to give 100 percent in everything? How do these strong individuals push past self-doubt to power through life?

Behind self-assured people lie layers of strength built by intentional, but often small, decisions. The following are some suggestions on how to take small steps to feel more confident and empowered in your life:

  • Implement good habits (or get rid of some bad ones). Habits can be good and bad. For example, establishing a nightly routine that ensures you get enough sleep to feel rested can help restore the body and mind. On the flip side, poor eating habits or neglecting your health can do the opposite. Taking care of yourself is an important step to feeling better about you, and being more emboldened to put yourself out there.

  • Roll with unexpected changes. It’s good to develop a plan, but don’t worry if it doesn’t go exactly the way you thought it would. Like habits, plans help maintain order in one’s life. Most would probably agree that order is better than chaos. However, living and breathing by a plan isn’t the best route, as things inevitably will change and cause detours, wanted or not. Be deliberate about creating a plan, but learn how to be comfortable enough with yourself if it goes another direction.

  • Try something new. This could be something big like skydiving or simple like trying a new restaurant (you could even do this ALONE!). Putting yourself in unfamiliar situations can help you learn to be content in your own skin and improve your mindset—and you’ll have fun along the way!

  • Be prepared. You never know when an opportunity might arise for you to step up and put yourself out there. Sometimes the smallest things can make us hesitate or hold us back. Always keeping some quick fix essentials on-hand, such as flossers, gum, a comb and stain-removing wipes, will ensure that nothing trivial will hold you back from seizing that moment and proceeding confidently.

Making these small but impactful changes can help you feel more energized about yourself, and motivate you to confidently give your all in everything that you do.
